Planets in youth : patterns of early development
Published in Unknown Binding by Para Research ()
Author: Robert Hand
Average review score:

A Book for Children of the Universe
Written by the world's greatest living astrologer, this book is actually my favorite basic astrology reference. It's a "cookbook" -- i.e., a crutch to use for beginning astrologers before they get this all permanently situated in their own brains. But for its purpose, it is absolutely divine. Hand is without equal in technical skill and, surprisingly, his interpretations are uncannily precise and on the mark, as if he were also psychic. He wrote these Planet Series books while Saturn was transitting his third house, no doubt giving him the discipline to achieve something so tedious yet important. I've always enjoyed learning in the simple, delightful way that children learn. This book is written to describe the effects of the signs, planets and houses in the birth charts of children, but I'll guarantee you, it fits every adult you've ever known as well. Perhaps we are all always Little Children trying to spell God, as Dion Fortune has said. I recommend this book, with a warm smile, to all my astrology students!

clear, accurate, inspired
Rob Hand's now classic Planets in Youth provides insight into the charts of children and adults alike. This was the first book I consulted on astrology, and I still refer to it regularly when I'm having trouble finding the positive side of a difficult aspect. Hand's treatment of the birth chart should be a lesson to us all: that it is a map for personal growth, and even the difficult aspects can find a positive outlet. If I could have only one book on astrology, this would be it. Hand's clarity, accuracy, and inspired writing make this book a must have for all ages.

I recommend this basic astrological research tool.
I have had Robert Hands' PLANETS IN YOUTH in my astrological library since it came out (1977)and I think it is a must for every parent. PLANETS IN YOUTH covers each planet, sign, the major aspects and houses in the horoscope in an exceedingly well organized format. Each chapter addresses one planet and a glyph representing the subject matter of each chapter occupies a shaded space on the edge of each page for easy reference. Unlike most basic astrology books, PLANETS IN YOUTH is dedicated to describing placements in a child's chart from a psychological perspective. Hand's writing is gentle and positive so that the text could be understood by a child (10 years old or above) and certainly by a sensitive lay adult. Yet the insights and accuracy he brings to the table are by no means unsophisticated. I am a mother who has practiced astrology as an avocation for 25 years, and I have referred to this book many times for its perspective. I have done charts for mothers who know nothing of astrology, and recommended this book as a companion. This is not a book that relies on generalizations, and the reader will have to either have a chart to refer to or have someone prepare an explanation of which planet and placements to look up in the book, which is what I do when I recommend the book. However, with that caveat, the book is a must for any parent who seeks insight into a child (and for any adult who seeks a psychological insight into his/herself).

The Presley Family & Friends Cookbook: A Cookbook and Memory Book from Those Who Knew Elvis Best
Published in Paperback by Cumberland House (June, 1998)
Authors: Donna Presley-Earley, Edie Hand, Darcy Bonfils, Ken Beck, and Jim Clark
Average review score:

This book it is if you want to try Elvis Food.
If you want to eat some food that Elvis Presley enjoyed in his 42 years of life, then I'm sute this is the cookbook you would want to have in your kitchen or wherever you keep your cookbooks. If you want to try the famous Peanut Butter & Bannana sandwitch, I'm sure you will find it in here. I don't have the book in front of me. A restaurnt has a recipe for Elvis Presley's favorite pizza. Which I'm not 100% sure if Elvis Presley was a big pizza fan. I think I'm am about 50% sure of Elvis liking pizza. But I am 100% that Elvis Presley loved Peanut butter & Bannanana Sandwitches.

Elvis favorites and mine!
Great book with some super recipes for all families to share! Love the pictures and the little tidbits of family stories. Keep up the great work Donna.

Filled with great recipes and tidbits about the King
I loved all the great photos and personal stories that accompanied wonderful traditional Southern recipes. Its much more than just a cookbook. The stories about Elvis were touching, and as a huge Elvis fan, and lover of food and eating, this will keep me in the kitchen for months to come. Elvis' favorite cornbread recipe is now one of my favorites. I highly recommend this book for Elvis lovers around the world.

Rag Rug Handbook: Revised Edition
Published in Paperback by Interweave Press (15 May, 1996)
Authors: Janet Meany, Paula Pfaff, and Suzanne Baizerman
Average review score:

Excellent for beginner to advanced!
Paula and Janet did well with this book. I am a novice rug weaver and found the directions to be easy to follow and the results pleasing. Definitely buy this book if you're looking for something on weaving rag rugs!

The One Book A Weaver Should Own
I am definitely a novice weaver. This book spells everything out very clearly, from A to Z. Plus, short history of many of the manufacturers. The patterns included will take you from simple to challenging. I have other weaving books, but this one is the one I refer to the most. If you only buy one rag rug handbook, I recommend Janet Meany and Paula Pfaff's book.

The best of its kind.
The Rag Rug Handbook is a must for any rug weaver. Beginner rug weavers and experienced will find this book useful and interesting. The listing of looms in the back gives a short history of each loom and the illustrations are most useful for identification or assembly (if your loom happens to be in pieces). Pictured in color are beautiful rugs using different weaving techniques with very complete instructions. Having trouble with your rugs - this is the book that will give you answers.

The Science Explorer: Family Experiments from the World's Favorite Hands-On Science Museum (Science Explorer Series)
Published in Paperback by Owlet (November, 1996)
Authors: Pat Murphy, Ellen Klages, Linda Shore, Exploratorium Staff, and Jason Gorski
Average review score:

Good Fun and Good Science!
Many science experiment books out there either have bad science in them, poorly designed experiments, or unclear directions (or, unfortunately, all three). This book has great experiments that are easy and fun to do. And, the science behind the experiments is accurate and clearly explained. As a scientist, science teacher, and parent, this book is the first one my list of recommendations!

Experiments for "Bring Your Kids to Work" Day
I ordered several books to prepare for the experiments I wanted to present for the "Bring Your Kids to Work" Day. This was, by far, the most useful and most interesting book I received. You can use the experiments listed in the book, and tailor them for younger or older children very easily. I'm going to order the sequel, "Science Explorer, Out and About," today!

The best and easiest book of its kind!
I am an elementary school teacher and the mother of three young children so I have read a lot of books that say they are filled with easy-to-do science experiments but this is by far the best of its kind that I have read. Within the first two hours my kids and I did three of the experiments AND had a great time together AND learned something!

The Second-Hand Parrot
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (28 February, 2002)
Authors: Mattie Sue Athan and Dianalee Deter
Average review score:

First-rate info from two experts in the field
This book has a special place in my heart, as I bought a second-hand parrot from one of the authors. I bought Peanut, my Meyer's Parrot, from Dianalee Deter about 9 months ago. Peanut was about 2 years old, and Dianalee said she'd adapt to a new home just fine. I was skeptical, as Peanut was VERY shy and hands-off; in her previous home she apparently was rarely handled or let out of the cage. But I got her anyway, and boy was Dianalee right! Peanut and I bonded very quickly (days), and now she's the most loving and playful parrot you could imagine!

This book wasn't published when I first got Peanut; instead I had "Guide to the Senegal Parrot" and "Guide to Companion Parrot Behavior" (same authors), and they were immensely helpful both before and after getting Peanut. This book came out just a couple months later, and I took a good look through it. It answers pretty much every question I had bugged Dianalee with, and carries forward the best aspects of the other books, too. I would highly recommend this book as well as the others Mattie Sue Athan and Dianalee have written.

I would also, as a general note, strongly consider a "second hand" bird instead of buying a baby. There are a TON of birds out there in need of good homes, and my own experience with Peanut has been nothing but positive. If you're in the market, get this book and think hard about giving a bird a second chance for a good home.

The Second-Hand Parrot
Mattie Sue and Dianalee have done it again! Put together an excellent book for all of us who have taken in second-hand parrots. The infomation is in depth, easy to understand and gives us all a new way of looking at things. The personal stories are a great treat for the reader. I highly recomend all bird lovers read this book, if they have a second-hand bird or not.

A Parrot Owner's "Users' Manual"
"The Second-Hand Parrot" - a new parrot care handbook from Mattie Sue Athan and Dianalee Deter - will be a sure-fire reference guide for anyone who has ever owned or has contemplated owning a "used" or "second hand" parrot.

This new book, which advertises itself as a pet owner's manual, is the latest in a series of readable, informative, valuable parrot books written by Athan and Deter and published by Barron's as part of its "Educational Series" of books.

The two authors have collaborated on two other Barron's parrot-related books, "Guide to the Senegal Parrot and Its Family" and "The African Gray Handbook." In addition, Mattie Sue Athan has also authored "Guide to Companion Parrot Behavior" and "Guide to the Quaker Parrot." Athan's first book, "Guide to a Well-Behaved Parrot " is now in its second edition and is generally recognized as an industry standard "bible" for care, training, and enjoyment of companion parrots.

"The Second-Hand Parrot" marks a slight departure from the authors' previous books. This is more of a "manual" or "handbook" - an easy reference guide that can be used to supplement any or all of the authors' other, more specified books. The writing style seems to be faster paced and more to-the-point than some of the other books. This is not necessarily "a bad thing." It's easier for the reader to get a quick, specific answer to a particular question.

Pet (or Companion) bird ownership has been growing geometrically in popularity in the United States and in many other parts of the world. Pet birds, especially parrots, are now the third most popular type of pet in the U.S. - exceeded only by the all-time favorite dogs and cats.

This growth in popularity has been a double-edged sword. While many more households now include pet parrots, a certain percentage of new owners find that these intelligent, complex animals are not a best fit in their family flocks. Unlike dogs and cats, with their thousands of years of domestication, most pet parrots are no more than one or two - or at the most - three generations from the wild. There are still many, many pet birds sporting the open-ring bands that may indicate a wild-caught parrot, imported before CITES restrictions were completely implemented.

Many well-meaning potential owners, attracted by the obvious beauty and intelligence of a pet parrot, may purchase one of these complex animals without considering the physical, emotional, and monetary investments that come along with the bird. Many times, a well-meaning owner loses interest or is put off when a bird reverts to its natural instincts - some instincts (including possible biting and messiness) that may be undesirable in some households.

The growth in popularity of parrots has also fostered a growth in second-hand or "used" parrots. Some owners may decide that they have made a mistake, and they try to sell or give away an unwanted, many times misunderstood pet bird. (I won't get into the very real - and very bad - possibility of an owner releasing a pet bird into the wild!) The "Second Hand" book mentions the growth in the number and types of previously owned birds that show up in the classified ads of a mid-sized urban area newspaper. If anything, the authors have understated the growth in the number of birds offered to new homes.

The book contains chapters on how birds arrive in a second-hand status, the types of birds offered, the costs attendant with even a 'free' bird, and the special challenges facing the owner of a previously owned bird. Information is easy to find and well presented.

This is a well thought-out book. Each section and topic logically leads to the next thought or idea. The table of contents and the book's appendix are easy to use and informative. The book itself is printed well, with generous use of good pictures, illustrations, and topic-related sidebars.

"The Second-Hand Parrot" will be a godsend to anyone who is faced with the unique challenges (and pleasures) of adopting a previously owned bird. However, this book is also a must-have for any and all parrot owners. Anyone - who has included in their family flock - a lovely, intelligent, mischievous bird that also comes equipped with "toenails and something resembling a can opener on its face" (Pg. 19) should purchase "The Second-hand Parrot." The wisdom and advice in this short, easily read book easily apply to all parrots and all owners.

I recommend that this book be added to the collection of other fine books by the authors. This book, and its predecessors are users guides and owners manuals that should be read and re-read. They are all great value for the cost, and this new book is a great, easy to use, troubleshooting guide that can be productively utilized by both a first time, neophyte owner and by a seasoned parrot owner.

The Secret Code on Your Hands: An Illustrated Guide to Palmistry
Published in Spiral-bound by Mandala Publishing Group (October, 2000)
Author: Vernon Mahabal
Average review score:

Simply wonderful
Bought it for my grandson and am keeping it and getting another for him. It is simple enough for children and informative enough for anyone with an interest in hands. Very well put together, with lots of information and a positive approach. I recommend it for anyone with any interest in reading hands or learning about yourself.

Great for beginners!
This is the best book for people who no nothing about palmistry! Its a really great book. This is a very sweet fun book. It is a quick guide to palmistry and so you can have a basic understanding of it. Vernon Mahabal has done a great job! Thumbs up A+++++ ^_^

Great For Adults, Too!
I bought this book for my 11 year old cousin, which I guess is the "recommended" age for this book, but I got a lot out of it, as well. It's not as if adults understand palmistry, simply by virtue of being adults, so 'big people' will find this interesting, too. It wasn't what I would call "babyish." The author doesn't insult the intelligence or write condescendly to the kids, it seems. The diagrams in it are simple and it's easy to see what they're talking about when they talk about the different lines. I think if you buy this for the young person in your life, you'll end up trying to read it, also.

Securing & Optimizing Linux: A Hands on Guide for Linux Professionals
Published in Paperback by Opendocs Llc (July, 2000)
Author: Gerhard Mourani
Average review score:

Ultimate means Ultimate
This book shows you how to build a secure, reliable and
clean network from the ground up, with optimizations and
security, using RedHat Linux 7.x as a base OS.

This book presents everyhting you need to know clearly,
concisely, and in an extreemly well organized fashion.

Each chapter is well organized starting with an introduction
on what the contents of the chapter are, why the items
in the chapter have to be covered and then a complete description
of how to implement the specific features.

The chapters are in logical order, so you always know the
order of things. HOWTO's are mostly written in isolation
from each one to another, not the chapters of this book: they are
consistent and follow a well organized flow.

I used to spend time searching through hundreds of web pages
for relevant, consistent and well organized info to configure
my network. HOWTOs are nice, but you never know which one
to apply to your situation and in what order to do things in
the big picture. Home grown web pages become obsolete quickly,
and newsgroups have a low signal to noise ratio making it hard to
find what you really look for. This book has the answers I
needed.

Buy yourself time off and get this book. It is worth it.

Book Worth Reading
I could not agree more. This book is an excellent reference for building a secure Linux Server. From file permissions to installing Apache, bind in Secure manner, this book has it all. I was very impressed by the book. Covers Tripwire, sXid, and many other tools to keep linux servers secure. Overall, i give it 5 stars.

A great Linux Admin book for newbies and veterans alike.
The short version:

An excellent guide to building a secure and efficient Linux application server.

The long version:

As an NT Administrator I have read many Linux books trying to bridge my NT knowledge to the Linux and Unix world, this book is by far the best.

Most of the Linux books I have read before tell you what to do to administer a Linux server, but they assume that you know how to do it. Gerhard Mourani tells you in detail what to do, how to do it, and why to do it. I have learned a great deal not only about Linux server applications, but about the Linux operating system itself.

If you want to take advantage of Linux's versatility as a server operating system, and do it in the most secure and efficient manner, you can find no better book than this one. In addition to operating system configuration there are many chapters individually dedicated to installing and configuring specific Linux server applications such as Sendmail, SQL server, Apache, BIND, and many more.

One disclaimer: If you are looking for information on how to build a Linux workstation or cool Gnome desktop, this is not the book for you. It is focus is exclusively building Linux application servers.

Still Holding Hands

Author: Stacie Ruth Stoelting

Best Summer Buy!!!!
This is a great book in so many ways. If you need a good summer read, get this one. As far as my advice, buy this book for anyone in your family touched by Alzheimer's or another serious disease. It'll touch your heart. It did mine.

Amazing book
"Still Holding Hands" is a remarkable piece of reading material! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this incredible book. I am impressed that Pat Robertson of "The 700 Club," Randy Travis, and Senator Chuck Grassley all recommend this book! It is amazing that such a young girl was able to write her grandparent's story (dealing with Alheimer's disease) like an educated adult. I felt like I was a part of the Beamer family - it touched my heart. This book educats people about the affects Alzheimer's disease has on families of victims. Not only does "Still Holding Hands" inform people about Alheimer's (through real life stories lived by her grandparent's) it also includes humorus, adventurous, and Christian romantic stories. I urge all to buy and read this page turning book. I could hardly put it down when I read it. I will definately read it again in the near future!

This is my favorite book!
"Still Holding Hands" is a spectacular piece of literature. I recommend it to everyone! Stacie Stoelting is an amazing young author who indeed has a gift of displaying her feelings on paper. There are in-depth descriptions about her grandfather's mental decline, his childhood stories, and the Christian romance between him and his wife. It is a very well-rounded book. I felt as though I was part of the Beamer family dealing with an Alzheimer's stricken victim. It nearly brought me to tears during some areas of the book. However, "Still Holding Hands" is humorous in other areas. It is amazing that the book has been recommended by Randy Travis, Senator Chuck Grassley, and Pat Robertson of The 700 Club. If you want want to read a heart-warming, page-turning book, read "Still Holding Hands". I could hardly stop reading it.....I may even read it again!

The Tragedy of Afghanistan: A First-Hand Account
Published in Hardcover by Verso Books (October, 1988)
Author: Raja Anwar
Average review score:

Powerful
This is a fine book dealing with the history of Afghanistan. It gives us excellent insight into the problems that currently exists, whether it be tribal, race or religious. Anwar's book will keep the reader on edge from start to finish, this book is somewhat of a self fulfilling prophecy as much of what anwar says near the end of the book has occured in recent afghan history. He details the rise of the marxist party and also how yet again the U.S. government poked its nose in business that didnt concern them and aided outsiders who had their own political agenda. The insight is amazing as are the facts which anwar reveals, this book needs to be reprinted during these days and times so that we can see how the problem developed and also who helped it come about.

The most excellent book of its category.
An excellent book, perhaps the most excellent ever written on the subject. I recommend it strongly to everyone. Although the author has been a Marxist, I do not hold that against him, as many well-meaning fools have remained ones at some stage or other of their lives. This book exposes in very lucid detail the true nature of the various Afghan communist cabals--and indeed, in a larger sense, the true nature of the Afghans overall. It also highlights very well the nature of the Afghans' Pakistani opponents, and in doing so provides a valuable insight into the reality of the ancient, vicious yet petty enemities that govern the relations and conduct of such societies with each other--yet continue to persist strongly even in these "modern" times of ours. It goes without saying that the Afghan situation proved to be the graveyard not only of the fallacies of Soviet communism in toto, but also of many of the West's current naive assumptions, too.

bible on afghanistan,s situation
anwar is the first and perhaps the only one who could clearly see through history and write in 1988 that the real bloodiest civil war will start after russian withdrawl.unless you go through this book you can not grasp todays afghan tragedy .the book has stood the test of history . i hope its new edition will be published.

Twined Rag Rugs: Tradition in the Making (Tradition in the Making)
Published in Paperback by Krause Publications (September, 2000)
Author: Bobbie Irwin
Average review score:

Tells exactly how to twine
I learned how to twine somewhere else, but I heard that this book had examples of how to make adjustable looms-that is the main reason why I bought the book. In the book it tells the basic way to twine and then some variations. It also tells about looms that can be made at home. It tells a little about what materials would be best to use for your rags. It has beautiful photographs of rugs twined by rag rug twiners in the USA. I did not learn the basics of twining from this book so I am not sure how helpful it would be for a beginner trying to learn strictly from the book. I would reccomend reading the whole book to get all the important hints before you start your rug.

Easy to do and frugal!
I recently bought this book because as a sewer, I have so many scraps. I use a lot of them for quilts, but still have many not useable for that craft. I also have old clothes that aren't fit for charity. Not wanting to add more to the landfill I decided to try my hand at rug making. This book is very easy to understand and follow. My first rug was a great success and was quick and easy to make. The hardest part was relaying what I wanted for a loom to my husband! I would highly recommend this book to any one.

Great book, great craft
Rug twining is an ingeniously simple craft, very humble but potentially dazzling. Bobbie Irwin explains all the techniques in an easy and direct manner. She gives instructions for the various primitive looms you can use. I built the Salish style loom one weekend and it's just superb for twining. Materials used for the rugs range from clothesline cord to cast-off blue jeans to wool, velour, and beyond. Any fabric can be used. The end result is a very sturdy rug that lasts and lasts--and that housecats adore.
